Dog Island

We had a couple of surprises lurking around the corner for us during this trip. The first one being the sheer number of houses on Dog Island. There's no road or bridge access to it so everything needed to build a house here has to come over by boat.

Not only were there enough houses to fit the description of a "community" but there was a large-ish marina housing the Dog Island Yacht Club with about 40 cars lined up alongside it. The small plane we saw landing on the air-strip and the collection of Post Office boxes came as quite a surprise too but not nearly as large a one as the one the weather delivered.

Our next door neighbour had warned us about traveling from St George Island to Dog Island by sea saying that the gap between the islands (known as "East Pass") gets pretty rough.
We weren't really sure what that meant and after spotting the morning weather was so nice, sunny and calm we wondered how bad it could be and decide to put in on St George Island and go anyway - it's only 15-20 miles, how bad could it be ???

We'll take a lot more notice of his warnings from now on. We're used to being in Kayaks and battling one foot waves every now and again in shoreline protected waters. Being on a Jetski battling 4-to-5 foot waves in what can only be described as open-water is a completely different matter. We made it back safe and sound but our future trips will be more carefully planned and pre-run by Ron Harper who has a lot more maritime experience.

Anyone who needs to know... The trick that we didn't use is to put in at Lanark Village Yacht Club early in the morning and head over to Dog Island, and be back by lunchtime before the afternoon winds pick up.
